Bio diesel is generally useable in cars built to operate on petroleum diesel.

There are several diesel-hybrid cars you could buy right now that could operate on bio-deisel. Mileage is similar for both types of diesel fuels.

The main drawback of bio-deisel is that it cost more than petroleum based deisel and is less available.

Deisel engines are generally more expensive than gasoline engines but tend to last longer. High performance engines are generally developed for gasoline fuels.

High performance diesel engines do exist. You can watch some of the best next Saturday (27 Jan 2007) at the Rolex Daytona 24 hour race. Watch for the Audi R10s. These cars are powerd by a TDI diesel engine. They will not be hard to find as they will probably be in the lead.
