** Anaïs and Jordanne Dervaes give a video tour of the city farm Pasadena where they keep chickens, ducks, goats and Wendy Witherspoon LAmag.com, October 19, 2009 www.lamag.com If you have ever watched your dog (especially after the “cleansing “the lawn) and I was wondering when it would start pulling its own weight, perhaps it is time to introduce a new member to the family: a farm animal. Chickens and quail, for example, provide a delicious fresh eggs, produce droppings while rabbits rich in nutrients that can be downloaded right into your garden soil for fertilizer. Dervaes Family urban farm in Pasadena is the gold standard for how to keep poultry in an urban space, so we’re back with our camera to take a closer look. Just behind the generous bed of greens is a pen that contains 15 animals (with various co-operatives and the interior spaces to sleep), but there is no odor and almost a beep. (PRINT ARTICLE: The sheep www.lamag.com certainly seems to contribute more than other urban domestic animals, especially birds, but these can be a bit ’smarter than your average backyard banties Consider some of the names for ducks: Meg .. , Jo, Beth and Amy (from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott) For the chicken:. Estella, Sissy, Lucie, Bella, Dora, Lizzie, and Sairey (literary glory to you if you guessed Charles Dickens) if you are already measuring . the courtyard of a house, be sure to consult local regulations before you ask online that share its space Fido … Video Rating: 4 / 5

4One of my goals is to get a house on a big lot with a south facing roof for solar panels and good potential to build a homestead using the principles of permaculture. I have to pay for it first though! I cut way back and I’m slamming 2500 to 3000 a month into my condo mortgage. Payoff will probably be between September and November of this year. Then I can save 30k a year. In 2 or 3 years I’ll be able to sell my condo, dump in my savings and buy my dream home with no mortgage.

10Since I have been reading and watching videos on the Dervaes family we now have 2 raised beds, Raspberries, Strawberries, Blueberries, Kiwi, Fig, Mulberries, Pecan, Peaches, and Grapes on our little 3/4 acre here. No animals yet, need a fence first. But well on our way.
